Firefighter Chad Cox from Wichita Fire sent in this video of a basic demonstration of the through the lock method of forcing a residential door with a rim lock. The video shows a good technique to help determine exactly which lock is actually engaged. Just because one is locked, doesn’t mean all of them are locked, and there’s no reason to waste time on a lock that isn’t even engaged! It also has a great close-up of using the lock tool at the end.

If you also choose “forcible entry” under you tube, there are some great videos that i learned from, also. It’s not just kicking the door in, even though its sometimes easier and more fun.
By searching “Forcible Entry” and “Witchita FD” there is a full set of FE and especially thru the lock videos are avalible and make for great training aides. Some very good work by the brothers in Witchita!
These guys did a good job on those videos on myspace. If you look under the similar videos there are tons of training vids on there all equally as informative. Atta boys for taking the time to do all that.

How about just breaking the glass, reaching in, and opening the door from the inside?
Can’t rule out breaking the glass and opening the door; however, it should typically not be your first choice. You’re crawling over and dragging your line through the broken glass. You also lose the integrity of the door. As the video shows, if you are efficient a through-the-lock, you can be in just as quickly as breaking the glass and avoid “ole Murphy” paying you a visit. Stay safe.
I like the training that I see, I just wish we would use all our PPE if we are going to be training other people. I see no eye protection in alot of videos and we must practice as we play.

Great job on showing a nice thru-the-lock way to get in. If you notice in the video the dozer in the background and the general disrepair of the house, I’m taking a wild guess that that was a training structure and braking the glass, though an option, was not the intent when making this video. I think the close up was nice work and thanks to the brothers in Wichita for sending it in. Some of the nay sayers need to be reminded that these brothers are taking their time and passing on knowledge to others so we can all be better at our craft. As most of us know, us agressive types are somewhat few and far between unfortunately, and I have no problems with what these guys are doing. Sure, safety glasses should be worn, I agree. But how many of you honestly do that when you’re on the fireground and time is of the essence….those that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones…just a thought….
