I hope this is a lessoned learned video. While it is great footage ,do not be impressed with these roof ops.I am sure when these guys saw this footage they asked themselves “what the f*%#K were we doing up there”?The only reason this video is being circulated is because of the extremely dangerous position they were in. Let’s be impressed by intelligent and effective vertical ventilation.Excellent site Jeff and Jim,thanks for sharing.

    Shawn,
Excellent points and thank you for sharing you thoughts and comments as discussions are the way we learn. I would have to agree with you on the video as a whole. In many of the scenes as evidenced by the end results, these operations where not as effective or the best decisions based upon our views after the fact. There are a few areas that I thought where better than others. I feel as truckmen one of the first steps in determining the commitment of manpower to vertical operations is the necessity of being there. In this I mean if crews are committed to operating within any portion of the structure in the offensive posture, it is a necessity to operate to relieve high temperatures, flashover conditions, and zero visibility situations brought on by the fire, and the explosive by-products of combustion. In the fire service we still have a very high fatality rate due to getting lost in these conditions as well as a rapidly increasing and staggering number of close calls due to flashover or smoke explosion conditions. As truckmen one of our foremost priorities should be life safety. Life safety means survival of the victims as well as Firemen, due to aggressiveness and more technologically advanced equipment we often overlook the need and safety of ourselves. Risk Vs Gain, —-Life = Risk—- Structure=calculated approach. In these equations I mean we risk for the life of others including our own and for the box we make a more methodical and calculated approach to do what we can to save property with minimal risk and consequences. Once again I have to say well put; I hope that with any item placed on vententersearch.com it becomes an avenue of learning and education for which we can evolve a safer profession. Welcome and I hope to view your postings more often. Jeff Ponds

Great video. It not only shows what can be accomplished by timely vertical ventilation, it shows what you really should not do! Venting a bow string truss roof, not exactly safe. Like JP said, when considering vertical ventilation, its risk vs. gain. When, where, why and how have to come into play in the IC’s mind. Also a constant evaluation of the structure and fire progression MUST be done. Like Jimm said in another post regarding vertical ventilation, get to the roof, get the hole, and get the heck off.
