One hell of an artist!! This on can trip up even the most seasoned chief during size up. This goes to show, stay calm, size up and report. I can this being tough late at night everyones tired and smoke condition is bad, you might report “two story 50×60 brick”. But on the funny side it would be fun watching my first due engine company trying to find access to the second story.

What about the guys on the truck thinking that there are living spaces above. Imagine them trying to vent the window for VES, one whack with the hook will get you good.

If you happen to give a on scene report as “Two story” and on your 360 you find out it is not.. make sure you correct it for inbound crews. It is better to sound like you found your own mistake then to allow other crews to come into a scene prepared for a two story fire to find it is only a one. Stay safe.

    Gents,

I must acknowledge that this deviant, yet artistic, style of increasing the retail value of your property is rather impressive. After all, I think the value of a two-story building is more marketable than a single dwelling? Not to mention, what a way to boost the property value without the astronomical remodel costs – sweet!

Now, I wonder…did the Vent Master teach the owner(s) these inconspicuous remodeling techniques? (Smiling/Laughing) Jeff, who loves you brother?

Seriously, this depiction only reminds us that we need to observe our buildings very intimately by noticing every single detail! Without an austere observation on the occupancy, we could have a somber breakdown in fire ground operations. And you know where that leads us – utter chaos!

Subsequently, if this particular building was burning, there’s no doubt in mind that we could tell those windows weren’t authentic. But, it would be humorous to send the probie up a ladder to vent them…. Let’s just refer to that as a “New Hire OJT quiz”.

    Be safe out there brethren!

Those painted windows reminds me of when I worked in the South Bronx NY. The mayors office thought it was bad for people driving across the Cross Bronx Expressway to see all the vacant buildings with broken out windows. So they went out and put tin over the broken windows and they where painted to look like windows. Some had curtains in the windows and some even had window boxes with flowers.

    Lets be safe out there.
