How to Wear a Radio Strap

Firefighter/Paramedic Shawn Roark, Bristol Virginia Fire Department

After you get your turnout pants and hood on then place your radio strap across your shoulder.

Then put on your Coat

After you Zip or snap your coat pull out the mike between the top of the zipper and the collar flap.

Then Buckle your snaps fasten collar flap.

This allows you to be able to access your radio by mic and at the radio to make a transmission.  Also allow the radio to hang below your coat a little this allows you to be able to change the channel and reach your emergency or panic button.

Do not wear the radio strap on the outside of your coat for two main reasons:

1.    You have more of a chance of getting hung up with the radio strap on the outside of your coat.

2.    If you are at rehab and you have taken off your coat the radio is with your coat. So, if a brother or sister calls a mayday and command misses it do you have your radio?  If the strap is under your coat chances are your strap is still on your shoulder and you will hear a call for help!
