Flashlight Mount

Jeff Daniels from Goodyear (AZ) Fire sent in a different method of securing a flashlight to your lid. This idea simply takes a thorn resistant bicycle tube and attaches it under the brim of the helmet. The thorn resistant tube is thicker than a standard tube and holds up better to the abuse. The tube expands to fit various size flashlights, and keeps them in place pretty effectively. Some people prefer to have the light mounted under the brim of the helmet to minimize a possible entanglement hazard. As you can see from the close-up picture the tube was secured using the shell retaining screws. Obviously this set-up will not work on all types of helmets, but it is a lightweight, cheap and effective way to secure your light if works on your style lid.

The thorn resistant bicycle tube could be used above the helmet as well. For those who have the large inter-tube that runs all the way around the helmet, the smaller thorn resistant tube could be zip tied to the larger helmet band to achieve similar results. This set-up would allow the allow this style of flashlight to be attached without using a “hard mount” bracket.

I did something like this on mine only I used a screw type radiator hose clamp and a small peice of sheet metal. It works very well just don’t tighten the clamp so tight that you can’t pull the light out if you need it in your hands

Just get another light to stick in your pocket. I know that everybody has plenty of pocket space, right.

    Both are great ideas!

Is this rubber strong enough to withstand..I dont know…say you were kicked in the helmet by a donkey or were struck by a flying electric meter that had just been pulled. Would it hold?

I like this idea because its like my women….cheap and easy

I don’t know if it’d survive a donkey kick, but it’d definitely survive a donkey punch.

Made one today from a free intertube i picked up at a bike shops. Most of the time they just throw the old ones out.

DMAN72… I am not sure about the donkey kick here. Mine survived a few Karate Chops, but the donkey kick might be a little too much. As for the electric meters, I havent had the chance to test it out. But I will let you know when I do!

Just curious, has any depmarent banned the use of these yet?? I am re-righting the department’s SOG and somehow this has to be covered. I see and have used many many of the online vid downloads in training but I must say I would not ever allow some of the shit that is released online!! Let’s face it we have all seen it, the what F%C& were they thinking is priceless!!!!!

    Uh……uh-oh.

    brickcity,

Believe it or not, several of us were just told by our captains that our flashlights have to come off our helments. Apparently, on my department if the idea has not gone through the equipment committee we can’t use it.

  11. Chad says:

Sorry about the spelling error “helments”….. I”ll fix that right now… helmets…. there you go.

  12. brickcity1306 says:

Hay Chad, its ok. And for “Peter” ok re write, jeezzzz I bet you have every NFPA form ever written.. Is that better pencil pusher???

  13. grice says:

We have had the state inspectors come though our department and take everything off that was not put there by the manufacturer…including reflective shamrock stickers…then we wait till they leave and put everything back on. I keep the Garrity flashlight, a rubber chalk and center punch and a shamrock for good luck.

  14. brickcity1306 says:

What state are you in grice if you don’t mind ?? I would hate to have someone tell me what I can or cannot have that makes my job safer/easer. I understand within reason your PPE must be issued but a sticker that is not blatant in poor taste. I had the “how does it feel to be second due” on the back of my bucket, it lasted half a shift then was removed,it was still worth seeing RES1CUE guys expression!!!

  15. billy joe says:

good idea..i think its funny that all these guys bang in there brass eagles on there helmets so they dont get caught up on things but yet they have big a$$ maglites hanging off the sides of there helmet?!

  16. mikeybeans says:

Did it on my helmet & it works great. I got a light short enuf that it tucks right under the lip of the helmet. My whole crew had me put them on their helmets too. Just gotta make sure u don’t stand there and talk to the Chief with it on…

  17. Masato says:

I also tried this, not exactly the same. It worked great. What I did notice was that the screw head inside the tube was rubbing and gouging out the flashlight body material.
