Aggressive Truck Functions and VES Class
VentEnterSearch’s own Jimm Walsh will be presenting a full day Truck Company presentation in Baden, Pennsylvania on Saturday June 8, 2013. The day will include two of Jimm’s popular Truck Company presentations: Aggressive Truck Functions for a Safer Fireground and V.E.S. is not a Four Letter Word.
The Aggressive Truck Functions for a Safer Fireground component of the presentation discusses the importance of aggressive truck functions and their positive impact on fireground safety and how they contribute to the success of crews on the fireground.
The V.E.S. is not a Four Letter Word component of the presentation discusses the widely misunderstood and underutilized tactic of Vent, Enter, and Search. It covers why VES is actually the safest most effective way to search a building and how to utilize VES in a safe and efficient manner to maximize effectiveness on the fireground.

Here is a short description of the class:
Many people associate the term aggressive with unsafe, particularly when it
comes to truck company functions. The fireground can actually be made safer
through the timely execution of truck company functions. This presentation will
stress the importance of aggressive truck functions on the fireground and their
positive impact on fireground safety. Due to the limited staffing that most
departments are currently facing, we must improve our efficiency on the fire
ground. Many departments are cutting staffing or eliminating truck companies
all together. Aggressive truck functions will allow everyone on the fireground
to work in a safer and more efficient manner. This presentation will expand,
and give valuable insight on the understanding of aggressive yet safe truck
company skills, and the value of training. Class participants will gain valuable
tips on how to increase the efficiently and effectiveness of their truck
company functions. In addition, participants will better understand the
necessity of truck company functions on every fire. Most importantly,
participants will better understand how aggressive truck company functions
can be utilized to create a safer fireground.

Tillers are some of the most exciting apparatus to watch, but a smooth, safe, effective tiller operation requires an immense amount of training and coordination. Bringing your firefighters to a high skill level can be a significant challenge. Tractor-drawn aerials are extremely unique pieces of apparatus that requires formal training; the days of “on-the-job training” should be the way of the past. This presentation identifies the principles, concepts and dynamics of driving and tillering a tractor-drawn aerial and will prepare you to overcome the common pitfalls that tractor-drawn aerial operators encounter. You’ll have the opportunity to view unique perspectives that illustrate superior and standard tractor-drawn aerial fundamentals.
You’ll learn:
• Pros and cons of tractor-drawn aerial apparatus
• Key issues for maneuvering tractor-drawn aerial apparatus and how to overcome common placement obstacles such as narrow streets, overhead power lines, hills, etc.
• Common driving mistakes made by tiller operators and tips for improved communication between tiller operator and driver
• Factors to consider when spec’ing a tiller

VentEnterSearch’s own Jimm Walsh will be presenting his new leadership program titled From the Firehouse to the Fireground on Monday October 15, 2011. The class is being hosted by the Fire Instructors & Officers Association of New Hampshire and is being held in Concord, NH. This Tactical Company Leadership is the follow up for another one of Jimm’s leadership classes From the Jump Seat to the Front Seat. the program is built on basic leadership strategies and techniques and takes a unique look at leadership from a tactical perspective.
This program covers bridging the gaps between leading a company on a day-to-day basis in the firehouse, preparing members to be battle-ready on the training ground, and leading your members into high risk fireground situations by highlighting the similarities and differences in leadership tactics for various real-world applications.

VentEnterSearch’s own Jimm Walsh will be presenting The Lost Art of the Truck Company on July 31, 2012 at the First Annual Mickel Begg Leadership and Safety Conference. The conference is being held in honor and reverence to the memories of Lieutenant John Mickel and Firefighter Dallas Begg. The conference will be held in Celebration Florida from July 31- August 1 and will also include presentations by Rick Lasky, Mac McGarry, and Mark Lighthill. The conference is hosted by Osceola County Professional Firefighters Association IAFF Local 3284, and the Central Florida FOOLS. Here is a short description of the class:
The focus is on the necessary command fireground functions and the roles of company officers and firefighters in mitigating a fire in a garden apartment structure. Discussions cover the unique challenges garden apartments present in a fire, apparatus placement, accessing the complex, understanding the construction type, ventilation possibilities, hoseline stretches, personnel needs, search priorities, and selecting the proper tactics.
